Renovation and Extension of a Building in Central Lisbon: From Old Building to Single-Family Home

Interior remodelling and interior design project in Lisbon by Margarida Bugarim Interiores. An old building transformed into a contemporary home, where the past and present meet in perfect harmony.

Respect the Past, Live in the Present

In the heart of Lisbon, Margarida Bugarim's studio breathed new life into a small three-storey building, converting it into an elegant single-family home.
The premise was clear from the outset: to respect and preserve the old, but reinterpret it with a contemporary language, designed for comfort and the demands of modern life.
The owners, who are passionate about the city and its architecture, were looking for a space that reflected Lisbon's authenticity, but at the same time offered spaciousness, light and an open-air space that would give them the feeling of nature inside their home. This duality — between tradition and modernity — served as inspiration for the development of the interior architecture and interior design project, where every detail was designed to balance the charm of the past with the comfort of the present.

A New Spatial Organisation

The reorganisation of the interior spaces was the starting point for the transformation.
The team at Margarida Bugarim's studio carefully studied each floor, redefining the areas to create functionality, fluidity and brightness.
The upper floors were dedicated to private areas, ensuring tranquillity and privacy.
The ground floor became the heart of the house — a large social area connecting the kitchen, dining room and living room, designed to promote conviviality and a feeling of openness.
This approach to interior design allows for a modern and relaxed lifestyle, where the house breathes and natural light takes centre stage.

Light, Nature and Continuity

One of the most distinctive elements of the project is the creation of a glass-enclosed winter garden along the entire rear façade.
This space, which serves as a transition between the interior and exterior, functions as a natural extension of the house.
It allows for outdoor dining and socialising, even in the city centre, while maximising natural light and reinforcing the connection to nature — an essential aspect of this interior renovation project.

Preserving Original Character

For Margarida Bugarim's studio, preserving the character of the original building was a priority.
Period architectural elements were maintained and restored, carefully integrated into the new context.
In addition, antique pieces and materials characteristic of the decade in which the building was constructed were acquired, recreating a genuine atmosphere full of memories.
This fidelity to the past did not prevent a contemporary approach.
Stronger, more modern colours, subtly applied to the walls and coverings, coexist harmoniously with the original tiles and other period details.
The result is a dialogue between the classic and the modern, where each room tells a unique story.

O Toque Contemporâneo

The creative use of reinterpreted antique materials and careful attention to colour balance give the project a distinctive character.
In the kitchen, contemporary design furniture was chosen to contrast harmoniously with the striking patterned hydraulic mosaic flooring.
In the bathrooms, the aesthetic decision fell on straight-lined sanitary ware and minimalist, contemporary mixers that stand out against the hydraulic mosaic flooring and bright green tiles.
This juxtaposition between past and present is what makes this house truly unique — a work that reflects the identity of the Margarida Bugarim studio: creativity, respect for context and a refined aesthetic sense.
Each space was designed not only to be visually beautiful, but also functional and emotionally welcoming — essential principles in the interior architecture work developed by the studio.

Lisbon, History and Contemporary Life

This project is an example of how interior remodelling can completely transform an old building without erasing its history.
In the resulting home, the interior design reflects a clear philosophy: to live surrounded by beauty, comfort and authenticity, in a constant dialogue between the past and the present.
